"The Region of Hope"
A Brief Story About Northern Uganda:
For 20 years, the world has shown little interest in the conflicts in Northern Uganda, and neither has the war seriously threatened any political power. The LRA rebel war has, however, had devastating effects on the Acholi and neighboring Langi peoples.
Acholi people covers Gulu, Pader, and Kitgum districts and Lango people cover Lango Sub region covering Apac, Amolatar, Dokolo, Lira and Oyam districts. Christian Communications Centre works in all the four districts of Lango Sub region.
Literally thousands of children have been abducted, over a million people have been displaced, and thousands have been killed. Internally displaced people are largely dependent on under-funded international aid programs, which are easily disrupted by LRA attacks.
Schools have been destroyed by the war. Most are deserted. In recent years, children commute each day to sleep on the streets in towns, rather than risk attack at night in their rural homes. The economy is in ruins, and rich farming land goes untended due to insecurity.
The war has been extremely traumatizing, and several non-governmental organizations and church groups work hard to provide psychosocial treatment and provision of aid for the displaced people and former child rebels.
The Missing Gaps:
After peace returning back to Northern Uganda there is urgent need for support intervention and multi-dimensional assistance by groups of individuals or organizations. The long range affects on the Ugandan people from such a lengthy war will require much help to recover from the massive losses of both human and material resources as they seek to regain their socio-economic status of prior generations.
Each opportunity for peace should, therefore, be given the greatest chance to succeed in interest of the disadvantaged community’s resettlement and rehabilitation purposes in Northern Uganda.
